The narrator and his knowledge

In this article I make a critique of the notion of omniscient narrator from discursive semiotics approaches, which leads me to distinguish three cognitive roles: observer, knowing, reporter. Armed with these distinctions, I analyze and reformulate the concept of narrative perspective of Gerard Genette and three joints: zero, internal and external focalization. At the end I illustrate these procedures of cognitive regulation by analyzing various passages from novels.
