This study aims at analyzing guidelines adopted by Adolfo Bioy Casares for the literary composition of short stories. For such, it assesses the writer’s moves through the aesthetic projects of Edgar Allan Poe and Anton Tchékhov, who, from the perspectives of Charles Kiefer and Ricardo Piglia, consist of central references for the writing of the short story from the 19th century onwards. From the examination of the displacements undertaken by Bioy Casares between the premises adopted by Poe and Tchékhov, it is argued that the Argentine writer ends up outlining what can be called a portolan poetics of the short story.

Letícia Malloy, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte

Letícia Malloy is a professor and researcher at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil). She has a PhD in Theory of Literature and Comparative Literature from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (Brazil), with a doctoral scholarship granted by Fapemig (Brazil). He developed part of the doctoral research at the Université Rennes 2, with a doctoral scholarship granted by PDSE/Capes (Brazil).
