Abstract

The ties of Jules Supervielle and Felisberto Hernández with their respective national traditions pose a critical problem. If the work of the former is crossed by the question of his bilingualism and his upbringing between Europe and America, the latter always found it difficult to be thought of as part of the Uruguayan narrative tradition, to the point of being placed by Angel Rama in the diffuse category “raros”. Through the study of some of his narrative works and his personal texts, this article traces, in their similarities and differences, his ways of destabilizing narrow national categories and offering new answers to the question of what it means to be a Uruguayan writer.

Francisco Alvez Francese, Université París VIII, París, France

Francisco Álvez Francese (Montevideo, 1992). He has a degree in Literature from the University of the Republic (Uruguay) and a master's degree in Philosophy from the Université Paris VIII, where he is currently pursuing a doctorate in Hispanic and Latin American studies. He writes literary criticism in different media, and has edited and prefaced, with Roberto Echavarren, the anthology Poems and Conferences (2019) by Federico García Lorca, and published the collection of poems The remains of the shipwreck (2019), the literary essay La noche Americana (2020 ). ) and the short novel Las invasions (2023). He is general editor of the translation publisher Forastera.
