In the extensive work of the outstanding Cuban storyteller Onelio Jorge Cardoso (1914-1986), his multiple approaches to the problem of animals stand out. The aim of this article is to analyse the short story ‘Caballo’, written by Cardoso in 1970 and published in 1974 as part of the volume El hilo y la cuerda, in order to propose that this singular narrative - which stands out for its intensity and meaning - is an extraordinary gateway to what we might call the animal-man universe. This places the research interest in the relationships that arise within this becoming or alliance between man and his horse. The analysis is based on the conceptual keys of Giorgio Agamben, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari.
