Abstract

Based on studies about memory by thinkers such as Paul Ricoeur, Maurice Halbwachs, and Tzvetan Todorov, this study examines how historical memory, individual memory, and collective memory operate in the novel The informers by colombian writer Juan Gabriel Vásquez. To do this, the main characters of the work (Gabriel Santoro Sr., Gabriel Santoro Jr., Sara Guterman, and Konrad Deresser) are used as references, with the purpose of revealing what is 'unspoken' by the official history about the Black Lists, Jewish antisemitism, Nazism in Colombia, and the concentration camp at Hotel Sabaneta in Fusagasugá.

Author Biography

Carlos Alberto León Agudelo , Universidad de Antioquia, Antioquia, Colombia

He holds a BA in Spanish and Literature and a MA in History from the Technological University of Pereira. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Literature at the University of Antioquia, where he is conducting research on the construction of memory in the narrative of Juan Gabriel Vásquez. He completed his doctoral internship at the University of Seville under the supervision of Professor José Manuel Camacho Delgado. His undergraduate thesis addressed the reinterpretation of the discovery of America and the conquest of Mexico in the novels Las dos Américas and Las dos orillas by Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes. In his master's thesis, he wrote a historiographical overview of the novel about drug trafficking in Colombia between 1976 and 1993. He teaches Children's Literature in the Elementary School Bachelor's program at the Technological University of Pereira and is a tutor for the Tutoring for Learning Program (PTA) at the Marsella Agricultural Institute.
